Governor Profiles:

Jacquie Turnbull ~ Chair

I was very pleased to be appointed to the Governing Body of Fairwater Primary School in September 2012. I've had a long and varied experience in education - having been a teacher, a lecturer, and a professional trainer specialising the personal and professional development. For the past few years I have been focusing on writing, and my books for educators have been translated into several languages. My interest in the governance side of education goes back a long way: I was originally a parent governor at St. Paul's C/W Primary School when my children were pupils (my three children are all parents themselves now, and I'm a very proud grandmother to five lovely grandchildren). More recently, I was chair of Governors at Coleg Glan Hafren up until the merger that created Cardiff & Vale College. I also spent a very interesting 10 years as Deputy Chair of the General Teaching Council for Wales. The culmination of this varied experience was being awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to education. I've been very impressed with what I've seen of Fairwater Primary School up to now, and I hope I will be able to make a contribution to the work of the school in the role of governor.

Councillor Paul Mitchell

My name is Paul Mitchell and I joined the governors of Fairwater Primary and Cantonian in 2012. Although the infant school is now the Sbectrwm Community Centre it has brought back a lot of memories as a former pupil. I am now a grandfather and a carer and since May 2012, a Councillor for Fairwater and Pentrebane. I have been a Councillor for Canton and Riverside and a governor of both Lansdowne and Kitchener Primary schools and have seen for myself the positive difference a motivated Primary School can make to both its pupils and the wider community.  I've been an IT and a transport lecturer and I have also published seven novels, a book of poetry, a guitar guide and I currently play bass and double-bass in Cardiff jazz and soul bands - so I can bring a wide range of expertise to the Governing Body.

Mrs. Carolyn Mason

I was appointed as Headteacher in September 2010 and have recently reached my 30 year milestone working in education. During this time I have taught in London, Devon, Canada, Australia and Cardiff , Fairwater Primary is now my eighth school. Despite many changes in policy and practice over the years I still enjoy focusing on the needs of the child . Each day is a new beginning where as Head I face different challenges. It is a privilege to work with a committed Governing Body and to this end ,I shall work with enthusiasm and commitment for your children, in our school  community.

Father Colin Sutton

I am now in my ninth year as Church in Wales Parish Priest of Saint Peter’s Fairwater. I have been a Governor at Fairwater for most of that time.I enjoy my work with the school,  taking the occasional assembly, school visits to the Church and Community Grounds.

Fairwater is my second parish and before that I was an assistant priest in three churches including five years in Caerau in Ely.

One of my aims is to help build up and enrich community life so I am very pleased to be involved in the development of our children and help them to make their valuable contribution to society. I will always make myself available to the Headteacher and staff if there are any areas I can be of help.

Music is my main hobby –Classical-Jazz and some pop. I play various instruments –keyboard to psaltery to cornamuse, and listen to music everyday. I have led a group of Medieval  players. I am very interested in art especially as an aid to meditation.I have a large library that grows as quick as it shrinks! At present I am preparing a book of original reflections for publication.

I have two godchildren, a very pretty but totally independent minded cat, and some very good friends who I encourage to take me out for meals!

George Fleri - Local Authority Governor

I was co-opted as a Governor in March 2013.  I live in Fairwater with my partner, Sarah and our four children.  My son Theo, is currently a pupil at Fairwater Primary.  I am a Police Officer with 20 years service. Hopefully, I can put my knowledge and experience of the Public Sector to good effect as a School Governor.  I am excited about  the opportunity to be part of the school’s Governing Body and enthusiastic about making an impact in my role.
